01
We live in an increasingly digital world, where handmade art and human interaction have become rare. For eighteen months, Spencer worked alongside traditional artisans in his workshop in Indonesia, carving, laminating, and creating by hand. Imaginative processes met generations of craft to produce something that honors the past while reaching toward the future.
The story of the wood, barnacles, salt, weather, and sea-worn history, can be felt through the hand carved texture. This tactile experience carries the marks of its former life, while its scale and form speak to what becomes possible when traditional craftsmanship meets innovation. The project is rooted in craftsmanship, reuse, and the belief that public art can create space for connection.
02
The sculpture is created by Spencer Hansen with his longtime team of Indonesian artists and collaborators. The work combines traditional hand-carving techniques with large-scale fabrication and years of shared experience.

To support this project is to support deep process. Generations of craft are brought into relationship with whole new systems to create a contemporary form. It is a piece meant to be experienced physically. To sit inside, climb on, lean against, and live with.
To back this work is to back the kind of work that takes time because it has to. And you can feel it.
Come and play.
Every contribution helps move the project forward. Support goes directly toward materials, fabrication, transportation, and installation.
Every contribution makes a big difference. Larger tax-deductible donations can be made through our fiscal sponsor, Five Ton Crane. Please contact us at inquire@spencerhansen.art for alternative methods of contributing.

We are looking for a small group of individuals with collective resources, materials, access, and connections to help bring this across the finish line.
We are also looking for volunteers to help with preparation and pre-build events in Grass Valley, California during July and early August. If you would like to get involved hands-on, please reach out.
