Beautiful Bizarre Magazine has put together a group show featuring 84 international artists to honor the winners of various art awards. Spencer Hansen will be showing a piece as the 3rd Prize Winner of the Yasha Young Projects Sculpture Award, 2024 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize.

From September 26 to December 31, 2024, the 2024 Shanghai Jing’an International Sculpture Project (2024 JISP) will feature 35 sculptures by 31 artists from 10 countries in natural spaces, bustling streets, and waterfronts throughout Shanghai’s Jing’an District. These sculptures, with their varied forms and styles, are accommodated into everyday scenes, creating temporary artistic enclaves within the city. Spencer Hansen will be exhibiting LXA as one of the 35 sculptures.

Spencer Hansen will present his solo show, Tethered Worlds, at Skye Gallery, inside the High Line Nine, in New York. This will be his first solo show in New York.

Spencer was born in rural Idaho, the youngest of 8 children. As a child, he found solace in daydreaming. His imagination offered relief from the confusing stories that knit together his family’s deep religious beliefs. He formed his own narratives in a world he belonged, an internal landscape inhabited by creatures. His world shaped by stories, so closely tied to his identity, is the foundation of his sculptural works.

He builds relationship through form, combining contrasting natural materials with precision. His sculptures are his language. Like all authentic storytellers, his art conveys truth. Truth about play, about joy, about belonging, and struggle.

Spencer still considers daydreaming an integral part of his creative process. While elements of playful, childhood days remain consistent throughout his work, the tenor of Tethered Worlds speaks to connections created through stories lived and imagined.

Spencer Hansen will present a solo show, Shaping Stories, at Samuel Lynne Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Shaping Stories is a reference to the dream-like play scapes that weave through his imagination. He shares his sculptures as the tangible representations of these liminal habitats, mapping the evolution of impalpable ideas into reality.

“I believe stories are meant to be shaped and shared by different people. There is something innate about humans that we can share stories, that we can create something real and tangible out of the ether, something that we can believe in together. I hope to show that in my work, to share something inspiring and playful and fun, sometimes melancholy, sometimes a little scary, but always fun.”

Spencer Hansen’s group exhibit presented by Skye Gallery Aspen at Aqua Art Miami will run for 5 days only. He will be sharing a mix of new sculptural work highlighting carved wood and ceramic sculptures and masks.

Forced to be away from human friends, artist Spencer Hansen spent the last year preparing for
his third solo show at Skye Gallery by making New Friends. He resolved to use the tumultuous
time to dive deeper and push further into his creative landscape. He shared the outcome of his
experience: “I made friends by making New Friends.”
New Friends is an eclectic collection of materials assembled to create a multi-dimensional
interspecies cast of characters. A palette of repurposed materials melded with an intentional
expression of duality; soft fur with hammered brass, ridged textures with delicate ceramic, all
express the colorful emotions of the characters. The collection welcomes us into an unknown
world inhabited by wobbly four-legged friends, hugging loving fluffernutters, faceted space
monkeys, and other oddly familiar yet friendly foreign creatures.

Meeting Spencer Hansen’s sculptures is like discovering a new species with an heir of familiarity. They have the power to elicit nostalgia and a sense of belonging, with an undeniable essence of something still unknown. Strangers invites us into our rich inner life of thoughts, to contemplate our perception of foreign encounters, and wonder at their significance in this world.

Spencer Hansen and Aleph Geddis will be presenting their first show together at Skye Gallery in Aspen, Colorado. In Tandem  features a collection of collaborative works by Spencer and Aleph as well as a wide variety of solo pieces from both artists. The exhibition runs  February 23rd – April 10th, with an opening reception February 23rd from 6-9 pm.
